There is a real desire in most organisations to maximise on-disk retention of backups and minimise the use of tape, and for small remote offices eliminate tape altogether.

The problem is that 30-90 days of backups requires a huge amount of disk space relative to the size of the production data and replicating it off-site requires large costly WAN links. The answer is to apply de-duplication to the data prior to it being stored on disk and being replicated off-site.

Not all de-duplication technologies are the same – in fact it is very difficult to deliver the right balance of performance, space savings, efficient replication and data integrity.

Many backup and archive solutions today include integrated de-duplication, and dedicated appliances typically provide even more sophisticated technology.

In the event of a restore being required we can go back to the last recovery point, but this will result in up to a days work being lost or up to 4 hours working being lost.

With continuous data protection solutions every change to the data is saved, so if a restore is required you can recover back to a point in time that minimises the amount of lost data. Protection can be configured locally within an array, combined with a remote disaster recovery copy or both.

As the technology runs off-array it has a number of distinct advantages compared to on-array solutions – minimal impact on the arrays performance, and significant bandwidth reduction using de-duplication and compression technology.
